“Aging in [the RIGHT] Place”

As part of our ongoing partnership, Dr. Ken Druck will be writing periodic blog posts, conducting workshops and working with Senior Home Purchase Program (SHPP) to assist our clients and their families in making difficult life transitions.  In this article, Dr. Druck reminds us to consider all options but to do what’s best for us when it comes to our living situation.

“Aging in place” seems to be the phrase dujour these days. Staying in one’s own home can be a great option and over 90% of people reportedly say they’d prefer to live the rest of their lives that way.  As we’ve learned however, aging in place is not always realistic, the best choice, the smartest option or the right thing to do.

Proponents of “Aging in Place” may prescribe it as the be-all, end-all solution. But many fail to consider several critically important factors including cost, immediate access to healthcare, accessibility issues, diminished ability to run a household and proximity to family. As uncomfortable as it might be, these important topics should be discussed as we consider our, or our parent’s, best possible futures.

I encourage people to “Age in (the right) Place” and carefully select the setting that fits their needs.  When choosing the best setting, families should incorporate all the elements that help people live independent lives, but we may need to transition to a smaller home, move into a “Granny flat”, move to a residential care community or find a more affordable alternative. Meeting with families to help them deliberate and decide about these sensitive and emotionally-charged matters fosters open communication, critical thinking, creative solutions, solid planning and, of course, love between family members. Good communication is the best insurance for quality of life, health, happiness and family unity.  It’s also the formula for making sure you are aging in the right place.
